I’m not gonna lie, we started watching halloween Disney movies in our house over a week ago. We’re not only big on Halloween, but we’re also huge Disney freaks so we get started pretty early compared to most people!
And I’m even mad about it…
A lot of these were staple movies in our house when I was a kid so not only do they set the mood for the upcoming holiday season, but they’re also nostalgic for me. Halloween and Disney are like my ultimate weaknesses so when you combine the two, it’s pure magic for me.
Nora also knows that I am a sucker for Halloween Disney movies so of course she uses that against me. I get suckered into extra TV time during the holidays, but I’m totally ok with it!
You’ll find the ultimate list of Halloween Disney movies below and each one has the rating included so use your best judgement on whether it’s kid-friendly in your opinion. None of the movies below are above a TV-PG rating.
If this list is missing any must-see Halloween Disney movies please let me know! If I don’t know about it, I’m going to be super sad, but I also want to watch it!
Halloween Disney Movies for Age 0-3
Of course, kids that are a bit older than 3 will enjoy these as well, but these movies really are geared towards the youngest crowd as the movies are animated and a lot shorter than the next list.
Mickey’s House of Villains (2002)
TV-G | 1h 10min
This one is great Halloween Disney movie for the little, tiny monsters (ahem, kiddos)! It’s pretty short and it’s an animated film that focuses on Mickey and pals while throwing in all of our favorite Disney villains!
All of the favorite bad guys join forces in this cute animated film. Cruella De Vil, Gaston, Captain Hook, Ursula, Jafar, Iago, and more ban together to take over the House of Mouse. They conjure up their evil plans to make the house their own while kicking Mickey and and a few others out!
It’s up to Mickey’s friends to save him, Goofy and Donald before the villains cause too much chaos and the house can never return to normal again!
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie (2005)
G | 1h 7min
Another cute movie for the tiny ones in our lives. What baby doesn’t learn to love Pooh Bear as one of their first Disney obsessions?
Fun fact, I have a tattoo on my arm that is a jar of honey because Nora’s first official favorite song was the Winnie The Pooh theme song. It reminds me to always have a child-like love and mentality in life. Maybe one day I’ll share a pic…
The movie takes place in The Hundred Acre Wood, of course!
Roo has a new best friend, Lumpy who wants to go trick-or-treating for the first time ever! Tigger warns the two friends about Gobloon who will turn you into a jaggedy lantern if he catches you. Tigger also tells them that if they catch the Gobloon first, they get to make a wish together.
Pooh eats all the candy so naturally, Roo and Lumpy decide to be brave together and go on a journey to catch the Gobloon so they can wish for more candy.
Follow Roo and Lumpy on their spooky adventure to try and catch the Gobloon, eat more candy and learn what bravery is all about along the way!
Toy Story of Terror (2013)
TV-G | 22min
Who doesn’t love Toy Story and a short movie option for when you want to reward the kids, but you also need sleep?! (Am I right???)
Bonnie is on a road trip with her mom when they get a flat tire and have to spend the night in a roadside motel. Mr. Potato Head goes missing. Other friends start to go missing as well.
It’s up to Woody and the gang to find their friends and solve the mystery behind all of the disappearances.
Halloween Disney Movies for Age 4-10
This list is geared towards the older age range of kids, but adults will love them as well; especially if they grew up watching any of these. They are a little longer than the previous list and most are not animated.
Under Wraps (1997)
G | 1h 35min
I haven’t seen this Disney Channel Original movie in so long! This brings back memories for sure. I was 10 when this came out so it’s definitely one that falls in the nostalgic category.
Three friends discover a 4,500 year old Egyptian mummy in the basement of a dead man’s house. The mummy comes alive and at first they are scared, but ultimately befriend him and name him Harold. Harold starts bumming it in one of the kid’s bedrooms.
The friends find out that if Harold doesn’t return to his sarcophagus by midnight on Halloween night, the mummy will cease to exist. They also discover that Harold wants to be reunited with this long lost love.
The guy who was dead…yah, he’s not really dead. He faked his own death to avoid paying taxes (real smart, dude). He finds out his mummy escaped and sends his henchmen after the kids to get Harold back. Obviously he thinks it’s a smart idea to try and sell Harold off to the highest bidder.
The kids fight against time, disguise Harold and work through a bunch of obstacles trying to save Harold and reunite him with his love for good.
Don’t Look Under the Bed (1999)
TV-PG | 1h 40min
Smart girl Frances Bacon McCausland (super interesting name) is starting high school a year early and begins to notice some strange things happening around Middleberg. Frances starts seeing the letter “B” everywhere around town. It is even spray painted on every single locker at school on the outside except hers. The letter B appears on the inside of her locker.
She meets a boy named Larry Houdini who tells Frances that he’s an invisible friend and he’s here to help her defeat the Boogeyman who is trying to frame Frances. Frances begins to believe this invisible friend after he proves that only children can see him.
Frances starts trying to convince her family and friends that Larry is real and she begins losing friends over this. Her family even begins to question her and fears for her mental health.
Frances’ little brother Darwin gets caught up in this crazy mess and the Boogeyman kidnaps him. Frances must remember the importance of imagination to save her brother and restore her friendship with her own long lost imaginary friend.
Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire (2000)
TV-PG | 1h 25min
Who doesn’t remember aunt Helda from Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series? No? Am I that old? Well, that TV show was awesome as a kid and aunt Helda (Caroline Rhea) is the mom in this movie which is why I watched it in the first place.
Brother and sister duo, Adam and Chelsea Hansen don’t always get along, but when they are both grounded and have plans, they’ll do whatever it takes to help one another out. They ban together to get their mom out of the house on a date so they can see their plans through.
Everything seems to be going great until their little brother, Taylor finds out that their mom’s date, Dimitri, is a real-life vampire! Of course, Adam and Chelsea don’t believe their little bro at first so they hire a vampire hunter to keep an eye on their mom.
They finally believe Taylor when they realize Dimitri doesn’t have a reflection. The siblings have to work together with the vampire hunter to save their mom from being put in a trance and taken away to Dimitri’s layer forever!
Twitches (2005)
TV-PG | 1h 26min
I love a good witch movie and I’ll be honest, I have not seen this one or the sequel just yet. I’ve added these two to our Halloween Disney movie list for this year. With a PG rating, I can watch these with Nora and I’m sure she’ll love them!
Two twin sisters, Camryn and Alex, who were separated at birth discover one another and their powers on their 21st birthday. They learn that they are from another world and they were sent to Earth to be adopted by two separate families. They dub themselves “twitches” a combo of you guessed it, twins and witches.
The two sisters must harness their new found magical powers to save the world in which they came from where their birth mother still lives. The world is in danger and the twins are the only ones who have the power to save their world and mother against an evil warlock named Thantos.
Twitches Too (2007)
TV-PG | 1h 23min
So the twins, Camryn and Alex have been trying to live a normal (yet, magical) life together when they find out their birth father could still be alive and living in New York.
Their birth mom, Queen Miranda fears that Thantos, the evil warlock is growing stronger and she wants the girls to perform a vanquishing spell during an eclipse to rid him from their world once and for all.
If they perform the spell, it will also destroy their father as he’s in the same land as Thantos. The girls have to work together and find a way to defeat Thantos, but save their birth father!
Invisible Sister (2015)
TV-G | 1h 20min
Cleo is a quick-witted, funny girl who is also super smart. Her science teacher sees her potential and challenges her to showcase her abilities.
Cleo, is the “unpopular” (I hate that term, hence the quotes) sister who turns her older, “popular” sister invisible when a science experiment goes wrong.
Funny how ironic this movie is, right? Not really. There are some important lessons to be learned here especially for the younger girls. Popularity isn’t everything.
Ok, back to our regularly scheduled blog post…
Turns out Cleo only has 24 hours to save her sister and must use her smarts and friends to save her sister before she’s invisible forever!
Cleo has to pretend to be her sister in a Halloween costume at school. She has to attend pep-rallies and play lacrosse to keep the secret going. She even scores her sister a date!
Cleo learns that being popular isn’t so bad and Molly learns that Cleo doesn’t need to feel like she’s invisible, living in her sister’s shadow. Overall, it’s a super cute sister movie and little girls can learn a lot from the two.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
PG | 1h 16min
I honestly never really gave this movie a chance until a few years ago. Boy, was I missing out on a great Halloween Disney movie! I just love it so much and now I buy all the things Jack and Sally! Uhhh….it’s also a musical soooo….yah. Amazing.
Side note because I know you’ll care…
We took pictures with them at Disneyland a few years back and let me tell you, if you haven’t waited in line to meet them because you thought it was too long and not worth it, you are soooo beyond wrong!
They were the freaking cutest and two of the best characters I’ve met at Disneyland! Their mannerisms were some of the best I’ve seen (along with Captain Jack Sparrow, of course!) and their interactions with the kids are priceless! We’ve stood in line each time we’ve gone since, they’re that good!
On to the movie…
Jack Skellington is the King of Halloween Town and has grown bored of doing the same thing year after year. He leads the town in celebration of Halloween, but wants to find something new. He coincidentally enters a portal that lands him in Christmas Town where he learns of new traditions, decorations, Christmas carols and of course, presents!
Jack brings this idea of Christmas celebration back to Halloween Town and decides they will also celebrate the holiday! The residents of Halloween Town just can’t seem to understand or grasp the concept of Christmas.
Sally is the freaking cutest little rag doll ever and she is secretly in love with Jack. She makes Jack a red coat similar to Santa’s so he can replace Santa.
Jack assigns Lock, Shock and Barrel (the cutest little demon children ever) to kidnap Santa Claus and bring him back to Halloween Town. Jack let’s Santa know that he will be delivering presents in his place.
Clearly, things go wrong, Jack learns that Halloween and Christmas both have their place and it was wrong to try and mesh the two.
Jack and Sally…well, if you’ve never seen it, I won’t ruin it for you. They’re the cutest. That is all.
The Haunted Mansion (2003)
PG | 1h 28min
Ok, one of my all time favorite rides at Disneyland! Probably because it’s a reminder that the spirit of Halloween always exists throughout the year.
In this Halloween Disney movie, Jim (Eddie Murphy) and Sara Evers (Marsha Thomason) are successful realtors. Jim neglects his wife and family because he frequently puts his work before them. Jim misses his wedding anniversary so he suggests a family vacation at a nearby lake.
The family ends up at a mansion after getting caught in a storm. The mansion needs a realtor so Jim jumps on the opportunity to sell the mansion. Soon the family learns there’s more to the mansion than they thought and there’s hidden secrets behind the people who live there. They become trapped in the mansion and Jim must learn to put his family before work to save them from the haunted mansion.
Frankenweenie (2012)
PG | 1h 27min
Who isn’t a sucker for Tim Burton films? Raise your hand, loud and proud! This one is actually a remake of Burton’s 1984 short film, Frankenweenie. The fact that it’s in black and white sends this movie soaring to the top for me!
A little boy named Victor is a super smart little boy, but keeps to himself. His classmates try to befriend him, but he stays pretty secluded spending time with his best dog friend, Sparky.
Victor’s dad encourages Victor to make friends and try out baseball. One day when playing, Victor smashes a homerun out of the park. Sparky tries to run after the ball and gets struck by a car suddenly.
Victor is devastated so he tries to bring Sparky back to life with a Frankenstein-like science experiment.
Victor is successful and Sparky comes back to life the same ol’ dog! Or so he thinks! Things go terribly wrong when Victor’s classmates find out and try to convince him to help them bring their pets back from the dead too!
Halloweentown (1998)
TV-G | 1h 24min
Another classic Halloween Disney movie that tops the list for me! I just think this movie is too cute and such a great one for the younger crowd. With 4 movies in the series it’s a great one to start watching and see all the way through.
We actually went to visit the actual Halloween town in a little down called St. Helens in Oregon. They have a festival every year and they celebrate the entire month of October; just as it should be!
There’s live music, food, vendors, face painting, a haunted house, tons of photo ops, etc. The festival keeps on growing as the residents keep the spirit of Halloweentown alive.
Down the street from where the festival takes place, you can also catch a few photo ops in front of the houses used to film Twilight.
Definitely a fun and inexpensive family-friendly trip!
Marnie is the ultimate Halloween lover along with her grandmother. But her mom, not so much. She can’t quite figure out why she is drawn to the costumes, spells, and magic until one night she watches her grandmother ride a magic bus.
Marnie and her siblings, Sophie and Dylan, follow their grandmother to a magical place called Halloweentown.
It’s there that they must harness their powers as a family and fight Kalabar, an evil warlock, to save the town.
Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge (2001)
TV-PG | 1h 21min
All of our favorite characters are back in this classic sequel!
Marnie has been hanging out with her grandma Aggie for a few years in Halloweentown. They are throwing a mortal Halloween party at their house in the mortal world when Marnie meets a cute new guy in town, Kal. Marnie shows off to Kal by showing off her grandmother’s secret magic room and weird things begin to start happening.
Marnie and her grandmother must travel back to Halloweentown to find out why these problems keep happening. The must get through the portal from the mortal world to Halloweentown before it closes at midnight on Halloween.
When they get back to Halloweentown, they find that the color has been stripped away and the whole town is in black and white! Everyone in town has been turned into boring mortals!
They find out that Kal is actually Kalabar’s son and the two warlocks are seeking revenge from their first encounter with the Cromwell family. The Cromwell siblings and grandma Aggie must work together to once again defeat Kalabar and restore the portal between the mortal world and Halloweentown!
Halloweentown High (2004)
TV-G | 1h 22min
Marnie is at it again trying to advocate for the mixture of the mortal world and Halloweentown. She convinces the council to let some Halloweentown kids attend highschool in the mortal world. Marnie is so confident the plan will work that she risks all of her family’s magic to make it happen. If things go sideways, her entire family will lose their powers.
The students are disguised as humans while they attend school. They begin joining sports teams, join in on typical highschool happenings and make friends along the way. Slowly, their human appearances start to fade and their natural looks begin to surface.
Marnie discovers that one of the councilmen is in on the disaster because he wants to keep Halloweentown isolated from the mortal world. It’s up to Marnie once again to save both the mortal world and Halloweentown. She uses a school carnival to showcase Halloweentown’s residents and show the mortal world they’re just like humans, just a bit scarier.
Return to Halloweentown (2006)
TV-PG | 1h 28min
The original actress who plays Marnie is not in this last installment of the series, but all the other main characters show up in the 4th and final installment of the Halloweentown movie series.
Marnie who is now 18 decides to change her original plans for college and decides to attend Witch University in Halloweentown instead. Marnie makes some new friends and enemies at her new school.
She finds out that magic is not openly practiced at the school because of her. The university was a place only for witches and warlocks, but because the portal between the mortal world and Halloweentown were permanently opened (not just on Halloween as it once was) a lot of students chose to attend school in the mortal world. This allowed other creatures an opportunity to attend and the use of magic stopped.
Marnie discovers an old family heirloom that contains a magical power only a Cromwell can use. It was locked in this box centuries ago as the magic was too powerful for any one witch.
Marnie travels to the past to meet Splendora who was responsible for putting the magic in the box. The box is stolen by some of Marnie’s newfound enemies and is forced to use the magic within the box to control Halloweentown.
Marnie must find a way to get rid of the magic once and for all so no witch can ever access the power again.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
PG | 1h 36min
I saved my absolute favorite for last! We literally have this movie on a pretty consistent rotation in our house whether it’s Halloween or not. When I think of Halloween Disney movies, this definitely tops my list. It’s not only a classic Halloween movie, but it’s a movie you’d consider to be a cult classic for any Halloween lover.
Max Dennison (Omri Katz) is the new kid in Salem who is struggling to adapt to the new town. He brushes off the stories told about the Sanderson sisters (Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) who were witches that were executed in the 17th century.
After reluctantly taking his little sister Dani (Thora Birch) trick or treating, they run into the highschool sweetheart, Allison (Vinessa Shaw) that Max is intrigued by. Wanting to prove the stories wrong, Max convinces his sister and Allison to go to the Sanderson sister’s house.
Max lights the ominous black flame candle which brings the sisters back from the dead.
It’s up to the three of them to send the sisters back to where they came from. With a little help from Winifred’s zombie boyfriend and a cursed black cat, the group battles it out against the sisters.
Also, exciting news!!!! Hocus Pocus 2 is set to release exclusively on Disney+. No exact release date has been set yet, but they just confirmed a director so things are definitely in the works and hopefully we can expect it within the next few years! Happy dance…
