Lower Your Expectations, Mama

Lower your expectations. Like right now.

It’s time to realize that your floors will always be slightly dirty.

And by slightly dirty I mean, throw the 5-second rule out the window. I would not eat off that floor anymore.

Also, don’t expect laundry to actually make it in the basket.

And now that I’m thinking of it…don’t even expect people to pick up after themselves.

It’s up to you to make it so dumb easy for your family members to help out.

I got you. Here’s a weekly cleaning schedule for working moms specifically and some tips on how to get some help without letting your kids or hubby know they’re in on it.

Printable Cleaning Schedule for Working Moms

Start slow with this house cleaning checklist if it’s overwhelming. Maybe pick one of the daily cleaning tasks to start and work your way up to more.

Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t get to it all. The goal is to try to get into a habit and habits take time.

Don’t expect you’ll be a rockstar at this overnight.

Commit to following some sort of schedule even if it’s not this specific one.

Plan your week out ahead of time. If you don’t plan, you will fail. Sorry, but it’s true.

Try Your Best, Working Mama

I know this can seem like a lot. So don’t feel bad if some weeks you get to most of the things on this list and others you can barely get to one thing on the list.

A house cleaning schedule for working moms can be hard. We do our best to get to the cleaning, but sometimes when you get home you’re just too tired.

Don’t beat yourself up. All you can hope for is your best. It’s what we teach our kids, right? So why isn’t that good enough for us too?

Get Family to Help Without Them Knowing

Start them Young

Kids Help with Chores

Start involving your kids as soon as they show interest.

The first time they imitate you sweeping the floor or ask to help with the dishes, that’s the time you start giving them things to help with.

Start small, but gradually work up to some more advanced chores that take more skill or that just take longer to do.

An easy one to start with is organizing the shoe rack by the front door, putting away toys, helping with a family pet, etc.

Start with one chore and once your kiddo has mastered that, add another.

Don’t Call them Chores

This is an easy, yet hard one.

We are all so used to using this term, but it has such a negative vibe.

Just tell your kids it’s clean-up time or it’s time to get ready for bed. Once you create the habit, they’ll know what to do.

When they don’t know they’re doing chores, they’re more likely to help and be excited about them.

The Whole Family Helps

My hubby helps with the bedtime routine, but it wasn’t always a habit. I’d have to remind him and constantly ask for help.

However, now, my daughter will remind him that it’s time to clean up or she’ll ask Alexa to turn on the “clean up song”. This encourages my hubby to help her as well and get involved without me reminding him.

Now I’m not the only one cleaning up at the end of each night!

Color Code your Laundry Baskets

One of the best things I’ve ever done and it’s so simple.

For younger kids who can’t read “darks ” and “lights”, just have a white and black laundry basket side by side.

This has been such a time saver believe it or not.

Now I don’t spend time sorting laundry by color. I just grab and go.

Keep the End in Mind

Clean Family Room

We don’t all love cleaning and picking up after other people.

I swear some of my friends and family actually think I enjoy it, but really I enjoy the end result…a clean home.

A home where everyone feels welcomed. A home that people like to visit. That’s why I am dedicated to a consistent cleaning schedule even as a working mom. It’s not for me, it’s for my family and friends.

So, remember to plan ahead and remain consistent. Those are really the keys to finally sticking to an easy cleaning schedule that works for you.
