15 Benefits of Decluttering Your Home

1. Less Mental Noise

This is the number one reason I learned how to declutter and organize my home early on. I noticed that I was stressed every time I came home from work, but didn’t realize clutter was a trigger for me.

It wasn’t until I came home one day after work, walked through the door and saw toys all over the floor that I realized maybe the things in my home were not only taking up physical space, but mental space as well.

I started to pay attention to when my stress and anxiety were at all time highs. It was always when I’d be looking around my house and seeing things everywhere. My mind couldn’t focus because I was experiencing sensory overload. I’d see an item and add it to a mental to-do list over and over. It was overwhelming and something needed to change.

I started with the bathroom cabinets. I cleared them all out, picked through things one by one and made a pile of trash and donation items. Once I put everything back, I realized that it was now all organized, there was plenty of room so nothing was smashed in there, and my mind was clear.

I continued this same idea until I got through every room in the house.

Now, my family is even aware of how much decluttering my home has helped me and they even take it into consideration when buying my family presents. Even gifts to one another are more meaningful because you are almost forced to put some thought into it.

2. Saves You on Cleaning Time

I wish I could do a study on how much time I have saved myself over the years because my home is not so full of stuff anymore.

What I can tell you is that even if my kid’s rooms are a disaster (which happens on the daily), it takes about 5-10 minutes to get them cleaned up.

Believe me, my kids still have a ton of books, toys, and clothes to pick up, however, there’s just less than what they had before.

When I decluttered my home, I kept all the items that either bring us happiness or serve a purpose. Using this technique will only get rid of items that are no longer needed.

3. It’s Easier to Fall Asleep

Ahhhh, this definitely plays into the mental health benefits you can experience when you declutter your home. I fall asleep easier because I don’t look around my room and see all the things that need to be put away or picked up.

Sure, there may be a load of laundry waiting to be put away in a basket on the floor, but for the most part, everything is put away and I feel relaxed.

Because I save time cleaning, I’m able to go to bed each night with a clean and organized home.

Yes, Every. Single. Night. I’m not joking.

Now, of course it’s not perfect (no mom has time for this!), but it’s good enough and that’s what matters.

4. Fewer Allergens in Your Home

By removing the clutter in your home, you are literally removing allergens from your home. You have fewer items for allergens to attach themselves to which means fewer sneezes happening around the house!

5. Your Home is Guest-Ready

This is the best feeling!

If your house is decluttered and you have a system in place to keep your home organized and clean, you’re always ready for those unexpected guests.

Sure, your home may not be perfect (again, let’s not put that kind of pressure on), but it’s good enough. No more stress related power cleaning!

6. You’ll Save Money

When you have less stuff and you have decided that you won’t let your home get cluttered again, you are more intentional about your spending. You pay closer attention to things you actually need or want.

Of course, you’ll still buy things, but maybe have a system in place that says every time you buy something, one thing needs to leave your home so it doesn’t get back to that point where a major decluttering session is needed again.

For example, if you buy a new pair of shoes, donate a pair!

In the long run, thinking purchases through will cause you to spend less!

7. More Time with Your Family

When you’re saving time from not having to clean and the decluttering phase is done, you will end up having more time to spend on the thigns that matter most.

Because cleaning up during our nighttime routine doesn’t take as long, we end up cleaning as a family (get everyone involved!) and then hanging out for a bit before bed.

8. You Gain Confidence in Yourself

There’s something about being able to maintain a household that is in order. Of course, don’t set insanely high expectations you can never meet, but take some pride in the fact that you got through the massive task of decluttering your home.

This is a huge feat and it takes a lot of courage to even get started down this path. Be proud of yourself for hitting a goal and for being able to reap the benefits of decluttering your home.

9. You Learn a New Skill

Who doesn’t want to learn a new skill and continue to grow as a person? Learning how to declutter and organize a home requires commitment, consistency and the willingness to grow as a person.

These qualities and skills can be used in other areas of your life and better yet, you can now teach someone else that can benefit from learning how to declutter their home.

It’s an awesome feeling to see how your knowledge can be transferred to another individual who just needs a little help getting started.

The benefits you reap from this should be paid forward to someone else who also needs the help.

10. You’re More Intentional

I touched on this earlier with being intentional about spending, but this really is bigger than just money.

Decluttering and organization keep your mind intentional in all aspects of your life. You tend to start questioning why you’re doing something, is there value, and does that something bring you happiness?

This is a great benefit of decluttering your home that bleeds into other areas of your life.

If something doesn’t bring you happiness or is not functional, why keep that thing? Why do that thing? Why keep those people in your life?

Be intentional with all that you do.

11. You Have More Space

This one is a no-brainer, but something I think we all take for granted at the same time. When your kitchen counters are decluttered and there’s more space, think of all the baking and cooking that can happen with your kids!

Think of all the people that can gather in your family room and have conversations now that you’ve removed all the clutter.

Not only do you gain more physical space, but you also gain more mental space as well. Your brain is no longer overloaded with to-do lists of items to put away, donate, throw out, organize, etc.

12. You Learn to Appreciate the Things You Have

When you remove all of the items that were just there to take up space, you can now clearly see all of the things that create happiness.

You also learn to appreciate what you have because you aren’t buying more and more things for no reason at all. You take pride in the items you have and you learn to appreciate those things a little more.

13. You Are Helping Others

This is an odd one here because you may be thinking, how in the world am I helping others by decluttering my home?

Well, think about it. By decluttering, you are identifying things that may no longer bring you joy, but there may be others in need of those things. You can donate all items that are in good condition to a local charity.

Another way you are helping others that isn’t as obvious and is longer-term. Your children or family won’t have to go through all of your things when you pass away. This may sound morbid, but it’s very true.

Going through someone else’s things when there’s so much of it can be very overwhelming and really is not a fun task. By decluttering and staying decluttered over the years, you are helping your future family by leaving only the most important things behind.

14. You Foster a Gratitude Mindset

I love this benefit of decluttering!

When you go through the process of decluttering, you realize just how much stuff you have been afforded in life. You clearly see how much you have.

It’s a good reminder that “stuff” isn’t what’s important in life. It’s what that stuff creates and can do in your life that can create special memories with the people you love.

15. You’ll Be More Creative

When your mind is free from the overload and crushing anxiety of a cluttered home, your mind can focus on other things like creativity.

I know that I need a clutter free space even when I’m working on a project so it would make sense that your brain would naturally be more creative once you’re living in clutter free home.
